Press Statement in relation to the telephonic conversation between

H.E U Thein Sein, the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-moon

1.  U Thein Sein, the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar made the following briefing to Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General, who called him on the telephone in the morning of 31 March, 2014:

 

a. 

After the riots broke out in Sittway in Rakhine State on 26th and 27th of March, the Government has managed to restore peace and stability. Law and order is now prevailing there.

 

b. 

The Government has taken necessary measures to ensure the safety and protection of all members of UN Agencies, Humanitarian Aid Agencies.

 

c. 

The Government has made arrangements for the Staff and Aid workers who would like to leave Sittway and has provided safety and protection to those who wish to retain in Sittway.

 

d. 

The President thanked the UN Secretary General for the humanitarian assistances provided and mentioned his desire to continue to cooperate with the UN and International Organizations for the effective delivery of humanitarian assistances.

 

e. 

An investigation commission has been formed to investigate the event occurred in Sittway, Rakhine State and the report of the investigation would be submitted to the President.

 

f. 

The Government of Myanmar will take necessary actions against offenders in accordance with the law.

 

g. 

The Government is cooperating with the United Nations Population Fund-UNFPA in conducting the Nationwide Census Taking Process to be in line with the international standards.

 

h. 

20 international observers are observing the census taking process throughout Myanmar.

 

i. 

The President has sent the team led by the Vice President comprised of the Union Minister for Immigration and Population and relevant Deputy Ministers to Rakhine State for necessary managements.

 

2.  The Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar is committed to ensure peace and stability in Rakhine State and for successful implementation of the National Census Taking Process with the entire people. The Republic of the Union of Myanmar will continue to cooperate with the United Nations and INGOs in accordance with her Foreign Policy.
